Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Product #31638 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Six months in a mix of French and Portuguese oak has given this wine a rich, smooth character. Produced from a field blend of more than 40 different varieties, the wine is stylishly structured and ripe with blackberry fruits."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Product #30699 (In Stock)
Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Odoardi Savuto Red 2013

A paradox - how can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from the brutally hot Southern Italian DOC of Savuto in Calabria?  Elevation (Odoardi's vineyards are at up to 2,000 feet) helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally.  Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit and a soft, round, juicy mid-palate while Aglianico (25%) adds structure and Magliocco Caniino, Greco Nero, and Nerello Cappuccino perfume and complexity.  A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.

Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Product #31614 (In Stock)
Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013

Best vintage yet for this long-time southern Italian favorite!

"The Cantele 2013 Salice Salentino Riserva shows a greater level of depth and finesse compared to many of its peers. The wine is packed tight with blackberry fruit, with Maraschino cherry, plum and prune in abundance. The wine is chewy and rich for sure, but it also provides an authentic and generous portrait of a red wine from Puglia. A spicy beef or lamb dish would make the perfect pairing partner."Wine Advocate 90 points

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Product #30424 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013

A happy ending to a scary accident.  When Ernst Steindorfer fell and hit his head during the 2010 vintage, he temporarily lost his sense of smell.  Unable to evaluate his individual cuvees of Austria’s top native grapes - Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt – to choose Reserve lots, he elected to just blend an equal number of barrels from his best vineyard plots to create kind of a “baby-Reserve.”  It turned out so well, now he’s done it for a third time – and, with sense of smell intact, it’s even better!

About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2013 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender.  The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.

“A distinct whiff of tiny, black elderberries promises joy. This is joined by white pepper and iron oxide to play on luscious but soft red and black fruit. The spice is exciting and pervasive and highlighted by freshness. The fine balance this strikes is expressed as straight-laced elegance. What unpretentious, honest joy.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Tselepos Dilofos Red 2013 Product #31452 (In Stock)
Tselepos Dilofos Red 2013 Tselepos Dilofos Red 2013

A favorite at Nostos in Tyson's, this zesty Green red is going to be a favorite here, too.  A blend of fresh and nicely ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that ages in new and used barrels for an extra layer of spicy/smoky richness.  The fruit really flows on the juicy mid-palate and keeps on pumping with added notes of spiced and fresh herb through the long, refreshing, finish.

Steindorfer Seewinkel Beerenauslese 2013 Product #30825 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Seewinkel Beerenauslese 2013 Steindorfer Seewinkel Beerenauslese 2013

The lowlands near Austria's glacial lake Neusiedlersee create the perfect conditions for great sweet wines - sunny days and foggy mornings that allow Botrytis - aka Noble Rot - to develop and concentrate grape sugars.  Here, Ernst Steindorfer uses shriveled berries of Scheurebe, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc to create a dense, layered, wine redolent of spiced honey, peach, pear, and apricot jam.  Round and deeply sweet on the palate, the brilliant acids come up on the finish to pull you back for another sip.

Classic white Bordeaux made from 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon with 30% aged in new oak. Creamy, sophisticated, and long.

"A lovely wet straw aroma leads to a flattering, creamy palate of sweetened butter, creamed apple, lemon curd and honeysuckle notes. A tarragon hint at the very end keeps this honest. Drink now through 2017."Wine Spectator 91 points

Ridgeview Cavendish Brut NV England 2013 Product #31552 (In Stock)
Ridgeview Cavendish Brut NV England 2013 Ridgeview Cavendish Brut NV England 2013

One of the very top sparkling wine houses in England is making a great case for the comparision to Champagne with this classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinou Meunier.  Loads of apple and subtle red berry fruit on the nose and palate with a fine bread-dough complexity in the background.  Finishes fine and crisp, with tiny bubles givinig freshness and inviting you back for another sip.

"A haze of summer flowers hovers across a fizzy feast of crunchy, green apple. Autolytic notes of bread stay clearly in the background while this easy, joyful wine majors on primary, crisp apple fruit and a whistle-clean finish."Wine Enthusiast 89 points

En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013 Product #29835 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013 En Numeros Vermells Classic Priorat Negre 2013

715 bottles made, 384 imported.  As in 2011 and 2012, Silvia’s “Classic” Priorat is, well, “Classic.”  A blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  It’s very young now and still a little shy on the nose and compacted on the palate, although the intensity, balance, and velvety texture are all easy to appreciate now.  My note from first tasting with Jonas:

“Dark and spicy fruit, long and rich, amazing power and then amazing finesse.  A “wow wine” with loads of dark, rich, fruit, powerful tannins, and a generous helping of Priorat graphite and slate.  Shockingly supple and sophisticated for its size.  What terrior (sense of place) is.  All in balance.”  Give this 2 or 3 years and enjoy for 20.
