A terrific bottle of classic and classy real Champagne, priced to share with a crowd.  It’s a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier, and 10% Chardonnay, and the majority of red grapes give it a richness and depth you certainly wouldn’t expect at this price.  When it made it's US debut back in 2012, Wine Spectator rated it 92 points, saying:  "Offers an array of flavor, including toasted brioche, Gala apple, lemon zest, graphite and ginger, with a touch of honey. Good intensity and a moderate, nut-tinged finish."  And, the Washington Post added: "Wow. What a terrific champers for the money."

Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Product #7655 (In Stock)
Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V Jean Vesselle Brut Reserve Bouzy N/V

After 300 years of growing and making Champagne in Bouzy, the Vesselle family has mastered the art of making rich, toasty, wines with creamy textures and pure, fresh, finishes. This 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir (80%) and Chardonnay (20%) aged 30 months on the lees following secondary fermentation.

A smoky, toasty, nose shows hints of strawberry, pear and spice.  Then fresh and very pure in the mouth with red berry fruit, pear, spice and plenty of toast, biscuit and brioche. Perfect balance on the palate through the long, creamy, finish that lingers on and on. This is delicious to just drink but will work beautifully at table, too.

"Powerful, vinous and beautifully resonant, Vesselle's NV Brut Réserve hits all the right notes. The richness and radiance that make Bouzy Champagnes so compelling comes through in spades. Rich red stone fruit, spice, leather and lightly honeyed notes all form a super-attractive fabric of aromas and flavors in this deep, intensely satisfying NV Champagne. What a gorgeous wine this is."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv Product #28947 (In Stock)
L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv L. Aubry Fils Brut 1er Cru Nv

From the April, 2014, disgorgement – the point when the Aubry’s removed the yeast from the secondary fermentation and added about 5 g/l dosage.  The Wine Advocate review below is for the September 2013 disgorgement, but the extra time on the lees did nothing but make this beauty better!

“Twin brothers Pierre and Philippe Aubry are best-known for their cuvees rendered from the full range of cepages authorized for Champagne; in other words, for their having tracked down, propagated, and showcased the “forgotten” alternatives to the proverbial trio...The Aubrys ought to already be known for perpetrating some of Champagne’s most startlingly distinctive and profoundly delicious wines, period.

With increased acreage and experience, the unorthodoxy of “unknown” cepages has now trickled down to the level of Aubry’s “basic” NV Brut. This contains just one-quarter each Chardonnay and Pinot; 45% Meunier; and a mixture of Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau (a.k.a. Pinot Gris). Nearly half of it is reserve wine, and more than half of that from a solera going back to 1998. If that sounds like a recipe for delivering complexity, you’re right and won’t be disappointed! Bittersweet perfume suggestive of gentian and iris mingles with intimations of fresh lime and sea breeze that in turn manifest themselves on a seductively silken palate in both juicy, vivacious exuberance and mouthwatering saliva-inducement. A scallop-like sweetly saline and mineral amalgam takes hold in a vibrant finish that leaves me caught between the urge to linger and the urge to take the next sip. This exceptional value by appellation standards.”  Wine Advocate 92 points (for 2015 release)

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Product #13997 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV

Over the past few years, Cuvee Crayeres has graduated from a delicious introduction to Eric's wines to a complex, distinctive, very grand wine of its own. It's a 60/40 blend of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with about 40% aged in barrel and 60% allowed to go through malolactic fermentation.  About 50% of the blend is from reserve wines going back to the mid-2000s.  With 5+ years on the lees and dosage in the 3-4 g/l range, it’s a classy, elegant, and very pure bottle of bubbly.

This year’s release beautiful to look at with a bright brass color, great transparency and shine, and very, very, tiny and persistent buttles.  The aromas are ultra-pure, featuring fresh bread dough, apricot, peach, pear and spice with hints of fresh hazelnut for complexity.  The flavors are complex, too, with fresh lemon, stone fruit, key lime, and green apple fruit notes with accents of salty (not sweet) caramel, toast and spice.  The texture is very fine and sliky and the finish very, very long, with fresh lemon pulp and salty hazelnut notes lingering on and on.  Enjoy it right now for its citrusy freshness or let it rest for 1-4 years to pick up more ginger, baked pear, and toasty, nutty, complexity.

Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Product #3165 (In Stock)
Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV

As always, a mature style showing brioche, hazelnut, toffee, and butter scents and delivering a powerful, rich, palate with an firm finish.

"One of Bollinger’s great assets is a massive stock of reserve wine, including 600,000 magnums held under cork. Gilles Descôtes tends those reserves, working with the blending team to subsume the variations of the current vintage into Bollinger’s Special Cuvée by using a majority of reserve wines in the blend. The result is a rich and harmonious Champagne with deep reserves of flavor. Its substantial, formal structure feels polished, its flavors balancing the cool earthiness of a limestone cave and the sunnier, bright floral notes of fresh cream. Built for food, whether emphasizing the freshness with lobster bisque, or the depth with beef Wellington and chanterelles."Wine & Spirits 93 points

"Aromatic, with accents of bread dough, smoked almond and crème de cassis, this creamy Champagne is lightly chalky in texture and framed by firm acidity, with flavors of glazed apricot, orange blossom and rich hints of clover honey and coffee liqueur. Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition

This stunning Champabage blends 70% Pinot Noir/30% Chardonnay from 3 Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy with about half from 2011 and the rest 2010, 2009 and 2008. Some of the base wine fermented in barrel for richness, supporting low (under 5 g/l) dossage levels.  This release was disgourged in May 2016 and will certainly be another in a long string of 92-94 point winners.  Galloni's review of last Fall's release remains on point.

"The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is all class. Suave, silky and expressive on the palate, the NV Grand Cru Tradition is quite pretty, with lovely brightness and freshness to balance the wine's inherent richness. Red stone fruits, hazelnuts, white flowers and mint are all pushed forward in this deceptively understated Champagne from Egly-Ouriet."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Product #13994 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Grands Vintages NV

As the name suggests, Eric Rodez’s Grand Vintages is a rich, powerful and very much “grand” wine in the tradition of Krug (where Eric learned his craft).  This year's release is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from seven great vintages going back to vintage 2000.  Eric ages all of these base wines in used oak and blocks malolactic fermentation to maximize freshness and vibrancy.  Then the carefully crafted blend spends 8 full years on the lees before being disgorged this October. The dosage is ultra-low - 2 or 3 g/l - so this could be labeled "Extra Brut," but there's so much richness and depth here that "Brut" seems more appropriate to Eric.

Past releases have earned plenty of critical praise, including 17.5/20 points from Jancis Robinson, 93 from Vinous, and 92 from Wine Advocate.  This year’s release is explosive on the nose and palate, pumping out big notes of lemon curd, caramel, toasted nuts, baking bread, crushed chalk, and more.  The flavors just balloon out to fill your entire palate and finish with layer upon layer of mouthwatering pie crust, lemon curd, hazelnut, crushed stone and salty caramel flavor.  Try holding some for even more richness!

Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru Product #17955 (In Stock)
Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru Egly-Ouriet Nv Extra Brut V. P. Grand Cru

"VP" stands for Vieillissement Prolongé - or extra long aging in bottle.  Here that means more than 6 years of time to develop toasty richness and need essentially no dossage. A masterpiece.

"The NV Extra Brut Grand Cru V.P. (Vieillissement Prolongé), Egly-Ouriet's from Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay, is stellar. A towering, deeply expressive wine, the V.P. possesses stunning depth to match its spherical, textured personality. As is the custom here, the V.P. spent 76 months on its lees, yet it remains vibrant, poised and deeply refreshing. A host of chalk, white pepper, dried rose petal and red stone fruits wrap around the intense finish. Aging in oak shapes the wine beautifully here. What a gorgeous Champagne this is. The blend is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. "  Vinous (Galloni) 95 points

"The NV Grand Cru V P Extra-Brut (VP stands for Viellissement Prolongé or extended ageing) is an assemblage of approximately 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and it is not disgorged any earlier than after six years. The youngest cuvée is based on 2008 (60%) and 2006 (40%), and was disgorged in December 2015. Clear, deep and nutty on the nose, this is a rich yet pure and fresh, straight and firmly structured blend that is still very young; it will gain further complexity over the years. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced in the grand crus of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay."Wine Advocate 92 points

Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Product #30056 (In Stock)
Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005 Bollinger Brut Champagne La Grand Annee 2005

More powerful, complex, and intense than Special Cuvee, Bollinger’s 2005 vintage Champagne is showy now and built to improve further with time.  It’s 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from 13 different Cru vineyards, about 95% Grands Cru and the rest Premier.  All of the base wines aged for about a year in barrel – high quality, used, barrels constructed at Bollinger’s own in-house cooperage – and then resting about 6 years on the lees of secondary fermentation.  Plenty of power here, but also sophistication and grace to the complex notes of honey, ginger, hazelnut, and dried fruit aromas and flavors.

"Very subtle, complete nose. Hedgerows and lift. Substantial wine that is not as tight-knit as some but is certainly attention grabbing. Drink now-2028" Jancis Robinson 17/20 points

"A powerful, structured and graceful 2005, showing deft integration of the rich, chalky underpinning, firm acidity and expansive flavors of crushed black currant, spring blossom, toasted almond, crystallized honey and preserved lemon. Everyone agrees on this one - as always one of the great wines of Ambonnay.

"Another standout, the 2006 Brut Millesime is stellar. This is an especially broad, creamy Champagne built on textural richness. Lemon oil, white flowers, smoke, almonds and baked apple are some of the signatures. Rich and resonant on the palate, the 2006 will drink beautifully for another decade or so, even if it could benefit from a little more time in bottle. Egly's 2006 is a pure pleasure to taste today."  Vinous (Galloni) 94 points

"The 2006 Brut Millésime Grand Cru is a really rich and intense, yet also a pure and fresh cuvée based on 60/70% barrel-fermented Pinot Noir and 30/40% barrel-fermented Chardonnay. It is a full-bodied, concentrated and extremely well-structured cuvée with a grippy, long and persistent finish. The dosage is two grams per liter.
