For those who wonder – the vineyards of Pouilly sur Loire came to be called “Pouilly Fumé” because of the Sauvignon Blanc clone common here. As it ripens, the grapes discolor and take on a grey, smoke-colored, bloom, and local growers talk about their fine “blanc fume” or “smoked white.”
Anyway, here’s a fantastic, family-made, Sauvignon Blanc with more class that a simple Tourraine SB and more mineral, flinty, cut than most Sancerre. The wine is the Bel Air Pouilly Fume 2010, 100% Sauvignon Blanc that crackles with lime zest, lemon oil, flint, and a whiff of gunsmoke but avoids any harsheness or angularity. The wine enters your mouth broad and rich and then drives to the back-palate with laser-like focus. Super crisp and mouthwatering at the end, just crying out for goat cheese or fresh fish.
