Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Product #31638 (In Stock)
Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013 Casa Santos Lima Confidencial Reserva 2013

If you enjoy juicy Cotes du Rhone, fruit-forward California Rhone Rangers, and plummy Spanish Tempranillo, then do not miss this spectacular Portuguese value. You’ll love the sophisticated aromas of graphite, crushed berry, fresh mint, smoke and black plum.  Sweetly fruited and supple on the palate with more currant, blackberry, and raspberry fruit accented by notes of baker’s chocolate, spice, licorice, and berry blossoms.  The flavors are very clear and delineated and the texture much more suave than you’d expect from such a young wine – especially one made from 10 different Old World grapes.  The tannins have softened since the review below, so enjoy right now with grilled foods and warm weather!

"Six months in a mix of French and Portuguese oak has given this wine a rich, smooth character. Produced from a field blend of more than 40 different varieties, the wine is stylishly structured and ripe with blackberry fruits."Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Cheval Noir Saint Emilion 2013 375ml Product #31784 (In Stock)

Alas, this doesn't have anything to do with Ch Cheval-Blanc, but it is a very tasty, drink me now, Bordeaux!  From purchased fruit, it's a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc aged in tank.  Classic Bordeaux aromas and flavors of red currant, cherry, cedar and crushed herb with medium-bodied weight and a touch of dusty tannin at the end. A great match for lighter foods and lean meats.

Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Product #30699 (In Stock)
Odoardi Savuto Red 2013 Odoardi Savuto Red 2013

A paradox - how can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from the brutally hot Southern Italian DOC of Savuto in Calabria?  Elevation (Odoardi's vineyards are at up to 2,000 feet) helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally.  Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit and a soft, round, juicy mid-palate while Aglianico (25%) adds structure and Magliocco Caniino, Greco Nero, and Nerello Cappuccino perfume and complexity.  A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.

Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Product #30794 (In Stock)
Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013 Colsanto Ruris Umbria 2013

Here's our single best-selling Italian wine of the past five years - a fantastic value that tastes like it costs twice as much as it does. The wine is mainly (70%) Sangiovese and delivers plenty of that variety's juicy black cherry fruit. But, the 20% Merlot in the blend rounds out the mid-palate and keeps the wine soft while the secret ingredient -- 10% Sagrantino -- adds spice and complexity uncommon in Umbrian wines. Sure, it goes well with pizza and robust pasta sauces, but there's enough going on to handle game and hard, salty, cheeses and a soft enough finish just to drink at a party. Fantastic value.

You can pay attention to the "South Africa" designation or not as you please.  The wine speaks a global language:  YUM.  Rich, soft, and wide open, this finishes with a hint of smoke that cries out for grilled or roasted foods.  Fun stuff.

"A soft, friendly style, with a lightly toasty shell around a core of gentle plum, white pepper and melted red licorice notes. The fruit lingers well. A crowd-pleaser."Wine Spectator 88 points

Ponga Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand 2013 Ponga Pinot Noir Marlborough New Zealand 2013

"Inexpensive" seldom applies to Pinot Noir that's either "New Zealand" or "good tasting" - but that's what we've got here!  This is unmistakably New Zealand Pinot with boisterous red berry and cherry fruit on the nose and palate with light touches of spice and fresh-turned earth.  There's enough tannin for food and a juicy, mouthwatering, finish that welcomes solo sipping - perhaps even better with a light chill.  Fun, tasty, cheap - a winner!

Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013 Product #31016 (In Stock)
Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013 Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013

A lovely example of white Rioja with just a kiss of oak to go with the dense texture and ripe, lemony fruit.

"A blend of Viura with 20% Malvasía fermented in new oak barrels where it aged in contact with the lees with frequent bâttonage for three months. The nose is quite serious and balanced showing moderate effect of the yeasts and oak, waxy aromas of apples, hints of honeycomb, fennel and licorice. The palate is quite fresh and surprisingly fruit-driven with good acidity and clean flavors. It's approachable and should also be able to age and improve in bottle for a few years. Quite impressed!"Wine Advocate 90 points

Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Product #31614 (In Stock)
Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva 2013

Best vintage yet for this long-time southern Italian favorite!

"The Cantele 2013 Salice Salentino Riserva shows a greater level of depth and finesse compared to many of its peers. The wine is packed tight with blackberry fruit, with Maraschino cherry, plum and prune in abundance. The wine is chewy and rich for sure, but it also provides an authentic and generous portrait of a red wine from Puglia. A spicy beef or lamb dish would make the perfect pairing partner."Wine Advocate 90 points

Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Product #31052 (In Stock)
Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013 Victor Zinfandel Old Vines Lodi 2013

Lodi is known for its plush, jammy style of Zinfandel, and Victor Vineyards’ version manages to stay much more balanced than most examples while still retaining a sense of place. At 14.8% alcohol, it’s not a light wine by any means, but it carries its weight well, and the alcohol comes across as pleasant warmth rather than booziness. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry, baking spices and pepper round out the appealing nose. Take a sip and you’ll be rewarded with brighter fruit flavors than you might expect - a hint of cranberry keeps things fresh, and the mouthfeel is definitely full bodied and satisfyingly plush, but not overwhelming. Ideal with an all-American meal of grilled New York strip or burgers!

"Zinfandel has become so risky in recent years that I often shy away from it: Too many examples are hot with excessive alcohol and ripeness, with sheer power masquerading as quality. This fine example reminds me why I love zin: raspberry and cranberry flavors, with hints of smoke and earth. It carries its high alcohol well (and 14.8 percent is moderate compared to some zins that crack 15.5 percent or higher). Best of all, if you don’t finish the bottle, you might be rewarded the next night with even more-vibrant fruit flavors.” ***/Exceptional, Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013 Product #31653 (In Stock)
Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013 Kangarilla Road Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2013

The late 2000s were a tough time for Australian wine growers, with wildly dry weather and a collapse in US demand for thick, jammy, over-the-top, Shiraz driving one winery failure after another.  Winemakers like Kangarilla Road's Kevin O'Brian who survived the crisis emerged with a new appreciation for wines that showcased Australia's rich, ripe, fruit in a more balanced, fresh, and even elegant style - in short, wines built for drinking rather than just showing well in competitions.

And McLaren Vale is one of the best regions in Australia for making this transition successfully.  Unlike baking hot Barossa further inland, the Vale lies just off Australia's western coast.  There's still plenty of sunshine and warmth, but it's balanced by cooling breezes and a bit of nighttime chill that locks in flavor and freshness.  In the fine 2013 vintage, Kevin captured the "new" McLaren Vale style perfectly in a 100% Syrah red loaded with red and black fruit, a hint of smoked meat, and pretty accents of licorice and spice.  Great with a steak, for sure, but also fine drinking while the coals are still warming up.

"Medium to deep garnet/purple, the 2013 Shiraz Estate has pretty aromas of black and red cherries plus cloves notes with hints of eucalyptus and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it has nice freshness, good intensity and grainy, firm tannins. It finishes long."Wine Advocate 90 points

Not quite sure about the label, but there's definitely some sex-appeal to this big, rich, red.  A blend of Cabernet  Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah from California's Lodi region, this pumps out big aromas and flavors of black cherry, red plum, blackcurrant and more with subtle accents of herb and oak spice.  Creamy and mouthfilling for sure, but not heavy (just 13.7% abv) and finishing juicy and fresh with a notes of pomegranate, cherry, vanilla and spice lingering.  Fun stuff!

"Spice- and smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and cracked pepper. Spicy, energetic and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that open up slowly with air. Distinctly northern Rhône in personality and texture, featuring a peppery, floral-dominated finish, smooth tannins and excellent closing thrust and persistence. The quality of this bottling consistently outpaces its price and appellation, and that's especially true in this vintage."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Product #30424 (In Stock)
Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013 Steindorfer Apetlon Rouge Burgenland 2013

A happy ending to a scary accident.  When Ernst Steindorfer fell and hit his head during the 2010 vintage, he temporarily lost his sense of smell.  Unable to evaluate his individual cuvees of Austria’s top native grapes - Blaufrankisch, St. Laurent, and Zweigelt – to choose Reserve lots, he elected to just blend an equal number of barrels from his best vineyard plots to create kind of a “baby-Reserve.”  It turned out so well, now he’s done it for a third time – and, with sense of smell intact, it’s even better!

About as fine a cookout red as you’ll find this year, the 2013 Apetlon serves up savory aromas of smoke, sour cherry, sweet blackberry, licorice and lavender.  The flavors are bright and juicy – roasted strawberry and blackberry puree – with complex shadings of exotic spice, dark chocolate, and earth.  The sweet, tangy, fruit pumps out through a finish supported by fine tannins and leaving notes of chocolate, spice, and fruit lingering behind.  It’s juicy and fruit-filled enough to handle sausages or burgers and has enough rich earth, chocolate and crisp tannins to excel with lamb.

“A distinct whiff of tiny, black elderberries promises joy. This is joined by white pepper and iron oxide to play on luscious but soft red and black fruit. The spice is exciting and pervasive and highlighted by freshness. The fine balance this strikes is expressed as straight-laced elegance. What unpretentious, honest joy.”Wine Enthusiast 91 points

Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Product #30492 (In Stock)
Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013 Bodegas Castano Solanera Monastrell VV Yecla 2013

"Even better is the 2013 Solanera is a “Vinas Viejas” that differs from the Castano (100% Monastrell), as this blend is 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. Another difference from the Hecula is that it was aged equal parts in tank and the other half in French oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit–the wine just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth."Wine Advocate 92 points

Tuscany's coastal Morellino di Scansano region showcases Sangiovese blended with other grapes, usually Cabernet Sauvignon but here Alicante Bouschet.  The red-fleshed Alicante gives a darker cast to Sangiovese's brigh cherry fruit, with pretty hints of chocolate and walnut for complexity.  We love the sweetness of the fruit and the pasta/pizza friendly juicy finish with lightly chalky tannins.  Fun stuff!
