Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008 Product #25034 (In Stock)
Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008 Ch Husson Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Saintes Vierges 2008

When Anne and Jean-Pierre Hugues purchased Ch Husson during the 2008 growing season, they decided to focus much of their energy for 2008 on the estate’s top wine, the cuvee Les Saintes Veirges. They elected to make a serious bottle of Chateauneuf, a blend of 60% old-vine Mourvedre for structure and earthy complexity and just 40% Grenache for sweetness and flesh.  Because of the high Mourvedre content, they elected to age the wine in mainly new French oak barrels.

The result in the difficult 2008 vintage is a resounding success!  Dark, dark, aromas of black raspberries, damp earth, licorice and baking spice waft from the glass.  In the mouth, definitely fuller and richer than Les Saumaudes, loaded with ripe black plum, spicy black raspberry, licorice root, violets, and earthy spice.  Firm and powerful on the finish with darkly raspy Mourvedre tannin and a touch of oak spice keeping the wine in balance.  This was very fine when I tasted it at the estate in January, but it’s already opened and gobbled up much of the wood notes in just a few months time.  Decant and enjoy with rich foods now or give it 3-4 years to soften the tannins and completely absorb the oak.

Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008 Product #25184 (In Stock)
Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008 Maillard Aloxe-Corton Grandes Lollieres 1er Cru 2008

Always one of my favorite wines from this address, the 2008 Lollieres flirts with Grand Cru concentration at a price that's low for a good 1er Cru.  The fruit is dark and concentrated this year - black raspberry and cherry - with accents of coffee grounds, sweet spice, smoke, and roasted meat.  At first elegant and silky in the mouth, the flavors fan out nicely on the long, ripe, and energetic finish.  Already delicious with roast duck, this will improve for 10-15 years.

Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008 Product #25046 (In Stock)
Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2008

Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Fontodi was already one of Chianti’s most outstanding producers, but was frustrated by the region’s regulations that required Chianti to contain inferior grapes blended with the estate’s great Sangiovese.  The family crated Flaccianello as a “super-Tuscan’ in 1981 to show the world how great a 100% Sangiovese, oak-aged, wine could be.  One of the first all-Sangiovese super-Tuscans, and still among the best wines in all of Tuscany.

“The pureness of fruit is so intense here. It’s also so clean and beautiful. The wine shows fabulous aromas of flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions.”  James Suckling 97 Points.
