Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Product #27907 (In Stock)
Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011 Quinta Dona Matilde Port Vintage 2011

The Barros family knows a thing or two about Vintage Port, with family founder Manoel Moreira de Barros starting the top-notch Barros estate in the early 1900s.  Quinta Dona Matilde was already highly respected when Barros acquired it in 1925, although it was equally famous for being one of the most difficult to farm vineyards in the Douro Valley.  Dona Matilde passed out of the family with the sale of the entire Barros group in 2006, but less than a year later Manoel Moreira’s grandson, Manuel Angelo Barros, was able to buy it back and return the Barros family to the Port and fine wine business.

Many of you have loved the family’s 2007 Vintage Port when we’ve offered it in the past, but importer Jonas Gustafsson and Filippe Barros agree with me that the 2011 is a substantial step up in quality and sophistication.  The wine opens with lovely aromas of dried blackcurrant and raisin with a touch of leafy tobacco, wet stone minerality, and vanilla spice.  The aromas carry through on the rich palate where nutty, spicy, undertones emerge and the sense of minerality gets stronger.  As you’d hope for in a young Vintage Port, there’s very nice grip to the firm tannins and plenty of juicy, refreshing, acids to keep everything fresh and focused. The chewy tannins don’t get in the way of the long finish where the minerality and spice notes really shine.  Try this now with walnuts and Stilton cheese or cellar it for as long as you’d like to.

En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015 Product #30988 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015 En Numeros Vermells Garnaxta Blanca 2015

Silvia Puig's 2015 Garnaxta Blanca starts with very old bush-trained vines growing on small terraces running up and down Priorat’s jumbled hills.  The vines poke out of a cover of broken red and brown slate with flecks of mica called “llicorella” that gives the fruit an almost salty, minerally, feel.  Hot, sunny, days drive ripening while cool, clear, nights maintain freshness.  Fermentation and aging in large French oak casks adds roundness while time in clay amphora gives a portion of the wine a rich, exotic, feel.

The 2015 is very young right now and while it’s already delicious, I think it will be better still this Fall and through 2020+.  Big aromas of green pineapple, apricot, fresh peach, fennel frond and salty stone carry on through a luxuriously textured, mouth-coating, palate.  Notes of spice, orange blossom, and anise emerge for even more complexity as the wine sits in your mouth – and it does sit there for a while as this beauty shows unbelievable palate and finishing length.  A burst of fruity acidity and loads of salty stone minerality bring freshness at the end.  To call it “the best White Grenache in the world” is actually faint praise:  this is a great, great, wine that delivers deep and profound satisfaction.

En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Black Label 2013 Product #29834 (In Stock)
En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Black Label 2013 En Numeros Vermells Garnatxa Carinyena Black Label 2013

1,256 bottles made, 564 imported.  Silvia intends her Black Label cuvee to be rounder, more supple, and easier to appreciate young than the more structured Classic wine.  In 2013, it’s 70% Garnatxa (both Negre and Peluda, aka “Hairy Grenache”) and 30% Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

Rich, plush, and seductive, this is showing more Grenache character now – dark strawberry and black raspberry – with accents of licorice and spice.  I suspect the blueberry/blackberry notes of Carignan will emerge over time.  Already, there’s plenty of Priorat’s distinctive slate-like minerality to help balance the rich, sun-warmed, fruit and a level of freshness and purity that’s rare in such a big, intense, wines.  The finish is warming and rich with big tannins that give an initial refreshing bite before melting away beautifully.  This will improve in cellar for much longer than you’d expect – 10-15 years, I think – although I doubt many will be able to resist that long.

Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Product #13997 (In Stock)
Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV Eric Rodez Ambonnay Cuvee Des Crayeres NV

Over the past few years, Cuvee Crayeres has graduated from a delicious introduction to Eric's wines to a complex, distinctive, very grand wine of its own. It's a 60/40 blend of Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with about 40% aged in barrel and 60% allowed to go through malolactic fermentation.  About 50% of the blend is from reserve wines going back to the mid-2000s.  With 5+ years on the lees and dosage in the 3-4 g/l range, it’s a classy, elegant, and very pure bottle of bubbly.

This year’s release beautiful to look at with a bright brass color, great transparency and shine, and very, very, tiny and persistent buttles.  The aromas are ultra-pure, featuring fresh bread dough, apricot, peach, pear and spice with hints of fresh hazelnut for complexity.  The flavors are complex, too, with fresh lemon, stone fruit, key lime, and green apple fruit notes with accents of salty (not sweet) caramel, toast and spice.  The texture is very fine and sliky and the finish very, very long, with fresh lemon pulp and salty hazelnut notes lingering on and on.  Enjoy it right now for its citrusy freshness or let it rest for 1-4 years to pick up more ginger, baked pear, and toasty, nutty, complexity.

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24683 (In Stock)
Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

Usually my personal favorite of the line-up (although 2007 Fonseca is pretty impressive!), the 2009 Taylor Fladgate delivers the Bordeaux-like elegance and class it's known for. On the nose black fruit with notes of raspberry and plum and hints of graphite and cedar. The flavors stay black with currant and cherry appearing plus dark licorice root, apple skin, and more graphite. The deep flavors stay over top of the firm, grippy, mouth-coating tannins that keep everything focused and almost elegant (if such a big wine can be elegant). Love it.

"Going back and forth, the Taylor's 2009 has a lighter nose than the 2007 with precise dark cherry, Seville orange, fresh fig and a hint of scorched soil. The palate is full-bodied packed with ripe black cherries, fresh fig and white pepper; very harmonious and focused although I feel that the 2007 has a little more depth and persistency. Very pretty and very pure, this Taylor's may well put on weight with a couple of years in bottle and merit a higher mark."Wine Advocate 95 points

Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Product #3165 (In Stock)
Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV

As always, a mature style showing brioche, hazelnut, toffee, and butter scents and delivering a powerful, rich, palate with an firm finish.

"One of Bollinger’s great assets is a massive stock of reserve wine, including 600,000 magnums held under cork. Gilles Descôtes tends those reserves, working with the blending team to subsume the variations of the current vintage into Bollinger’s Special Cuvée by using a majority of reserve wines in the blend. The result is a rich and harmonious Champagne with deep reserves of flavor. Its substantial, formal structure feels polished, its flavors balancing the cool earthiness of a limestone cave and the sunnier, bright floral notes of fresh cream. Built for food, whether emphasizing the freshness with lobster bisque, or the depth with beef Wellington and chanterelles."Wine & Spirits 93 points

"Aromatic, with accents of bread dough, smoked almond and crème de cassis, this creamy Champagne is lightly chalky in texture and framed by firm acidity, with flavors of glazed apricot, orange blossom and rich hints of clover honey and coffee liqueur. Drink now through 2022."Wine Spectator 93 points

Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Product #29046 (In Stock)
Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv Barbeito Madeira Baltimore Rainwater Nv

"The non-vintage RWC Baltimore Rainwater (bottled January 2012) was designed to reintroduce Rainwater as a prestige style rather than the cheaper, paler versions of years gone by. Its template was a Rainwater that Mannie Berk tasted from the 1820s. It has a light lanolin, melted candle wax, dried fig and orange blossom-scented bouquet that expands nicely with aeration. The palate is crisp and light on the entry, with a vibrant citric thread that combines succinctly with bitter orange and mandarin notes. It is laced with a touch of toffee towards the elegant finish. This is delicate, understated and delicious."Wine Advocate 89 points

Conceito Branco 2011 Product #29112 (In Stock)
Conceito Branco 2011 Conceito Branco 2011

Rita first came to international attention with the 2007 edition of this white, and Wine Advocate once again named this their top Douro white in 2011.  It’s a field blend of of Rabigato, Côdega de Larinho, Códega, Viosinho and Gouveio from an ancient, pre-phylloxera, vineyard in the cool Teja Valley, far above the Douro River.  Rita fermented and aged the just ripe fruit for 10 months in a blend of French and Caucasian oak, about 40% new.

This takes the bright, fresh, fruit flavors of the Contraste Branco and adds a layer of white Burgundy sophistication and complexity.  Aromas of apple, apricot, grilled pineapple, smoke, crushed chervil, and wet stones.  The flavors follow the nose and add creamy vanilla, toasted nut, and brown spice and find the crushed fresh herb coming forward.  An anise note emerges on the back and carries through to the long, broad, and super-fresh finish that just keeps pumping out juicy acids, bitter citrus pith, and salty mineral flavors for a minute or more. A stunner for now and years to come.

"More minerally and longer than the Contraste and a little more concentrated and with greater ageing potential. Citrus, grapefruit, mineral and really good length. Sophisticated with a line of freshness and drive."  JancisRobinson.com 17/20

"If the ‘11 Contraste is sunny and exhilarating, this adds the solidity and power, while remaining fresh, pure and bright. It has oak, but it seems so fresh that I can taste the tank. It ends with a gripping finish. The ‘10 may brood a bit more, but this may well be the best wine here and I’ll be interested to see how it ages. It combines that youthful exuberance with fine depth and solidity. Drink now-2019."Wine Advocate 93 points

"This rich, wood-aged wine is balanced and stylish. It shows the great potential for white wine in the Douro, with its panoply of flavors ranging from creamed apple to white peach, with a hint of herb. It’s a fruity offering that will age for at least 3–4 years."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

"This elegant version features an expressive profile that rides the delicate, lacy mousse, enlivened by finely knit, vibrant acidity. Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Product #24682 (In Stock)
Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml Fonseca Vintage Port 2009 375 Ml

If Croft is the Aussie Shiraz of the line, then Fonseca is the Napa Cabernet. The story here is all about power - powerful aromatics, powerful palate, powerful tannins. Big aromas feature dark black currant and plum accented by notes of chocolate, vanilla, and coffee with citrus and menthol overtones. In the mouth, firm and packed with muscular black fruit, dark chocolate, and licorice root flavors. As the velvet cloaked tannins well up on the finish, a beautiful floral note emerges as well. This probably isn't as fine as the 2007, but it's outstanding nonetheless!

"The Fonseca 2009 has a very ripe sweet prune and fig-tinged bouquet that is very precocious. Touches of smoke, raisin and dark plum begin to emerge with time, though it needs to evolve a little more cohesion. The palate is full-bodied with saturated tannins, luscious dark berried fruit, touches of pomegranate, fig and dates that lead to a gently grippy, persistent finish."Wine Advocate 93 points

715 bottles made, 384 imported.  As in 2011 and 2012, Silvia’s “Classic” Priorat is, well, “Classic.”  A blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  It’s very young now and still a little shy on the nose and compacted on the palate, although the intensity, balance, and velvety texture are all easy to appreciate now.  My note from first tasting with Jonas:

“Dark and spicy fruit, long and rich, amazing power and then amazing finesse.  A “wow wine” with loads of dark, rich, fruit, powerful tannins, and a generous helping of Priorat graphite and slate.  Shockingly supple and sophisticated for its size.  What terrior (sense of place) is.  All in balance.”  Give this 2 or 3 years and enjoy for 20.

This stunning Champabage blends 70% Pinot Noir/30% Chardonnay from 3 Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay, Verzenay and Bouzy with about half from 2011 and the rest 2010, 2009 and 2008. Some of the base wine fermented in barrel for richness, supporting low (under 5 g/l) dossage levels.  This release was disgourged in May 2016 and will certainly be another in a long string of 92-94 point winners.  Galloni's review of last Fall's release remains on point.

"The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is all class. Suave, silky and expressive on the palate, the NV Grand Cru Tradition is quite pretty, with lovely brightness and freshness to balance the wine's inherent richness. Red stone fruits, hazelnuts, white flowers and mint are all pushed forward in this deceptively understated Champagne from Egly-Ouriet."  Vinous (Galloni) 92 points
