Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015 Product #31235 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015 Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Gmork 2015

As the Post says, Austria's 2015s “are among the best white wines in the world in terms of value and quality, and they’re enjoying the best vintage in recent memory.”   Certainly, this is the best vintage of this stunning value single-vineyard Gruner to date!  There’s a refreshing salty brininess to the aromas here, along with fresh pear and meyer lemon. On the palate there’s a pleasing weightiness from that extra notch of ripeness 2015’s near perfect conditions brought that you wouldn’t expect from all those brisk, fresh aromas. That pear aroma takes on a lovely ripeness, and there’s a delicious ripe apple flavor as well, like biting into a fresh Honeycrisp. A refreshing, versatile white.

“Notes of crisp green pear and crunchy red apple are very appetizing, the palate is fresh and echoes these flavors and edges them with some spice and alcoholic heat, but also has a drive and energy of its own. Friendly and very moreish.”Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2015 Product #31347 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2015 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 2015

Karl and Brigitta Steininger are most famous in Austria for their sparkling wines, but their Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner has always been one of our favorite wines from this classy estate in Langenlois.  In 2015, the Steinenger family was able to harvest a glorious (if small) crop of perfectly ripe Grüner from their vineyards running up the slopes above Langenlois.  For all the ripeness of the fruit, their wine is as crisp, clean and super fresh as ever with notes of lemon zest, white pepper and crushed stone adding complexity to the fleshy apple and pear fruit.  A great cocktail and seafood wine and a refreshing match for sausages and salads, too.

"Totally zesty swirls of ripe citrus sweep up green pear and yeast notes as they rise from the glass and flow across the palate. This has verve and liveliness and acts like a tonic: it's light-bodied, balanced, scented refreshment."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Katharina 2015 Product #30899 (In Stock)
Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Katharina 2015 Josef Bauer Gruner Veltliner Katharina 2015

The simple story here:  this drinks like a $30-$50 Grüner from one of Austria’s more famous estates and costs a lot less.  If you’d like to experience what happens when Grüner goes from “delicious fun” to “seriously delicious,” then get your hands on a few bottles of Joe Bauer’s 2015 Gruner Katharina.

Joe crafts this cuvee, named for his daughter, from vines growing on pure, calcium and clay-rich, loess soils on different parts of the hill.  He picks some of these sites early to maximize crispness and green, tangy, fruit notes.  Others are harvested late for maximum ripeness, more exotic fruit, and density on the palate.  A complex formula leads to a complex wine, layered with notes of pineapple, Clementine, apricot, Golden Delicious, green herb and dusty white pepper.  The texture is rich and luxurious, sitting on your lounge with good weight balanced by dusty, crushed stone, minerality.  The finish is simply endless, coating your palate and leaving pops of fruit, mineral, pepper and more to savor on and on.  A great seafood sausage would be great here, although most anything fried or with a bit of cream sauce would satisfy.

Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner Bergdistel Smaragd 2015 Product #31320 (In Stock)
Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner Bergdistel Smaragd 2015 Tegernseerhof Gruner Veltliner Bergdistel Smaragd 2015

A blend of from magnificent Wachau sites, some at nose-bleed altitudes for sizzling energy and minerality, other from lower sites for ripe tropical fruit and palate-coating richness. Give it a swirl and you’ll be greeted with generous aromas of dusty pear, green pineapple, fresh lemon, salty stone and subtle white pepper.  Take a sip and you’ll immediately notice the fabulous texture – mouth-coating, dense, and creamy with an almost buttery richness.  The wine explodes with deep flavors of tangy pineapple, just squeezed lemon juice, spiced pear, fresh sweet pea and more white pepper notes that linger on and on.

The 2015 Bergidstel earned a fine 92 point rating from Falstaff, Austria’s premier wine publication.  Their review is spot on:  "Medium yellow-green, silver reflexes. Fine herb wort, fresh yellow fruit, delicate orange. Juicy, delicate fruit juices, taut, elegant and full-bodied, fresh acid curve, already well developed, a versatile food companion."  Falstaff 92 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kittmannsberg Reserve 2014 Product #30425 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kittmannsberg Reserve 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Kittmannsberg Reserve 2014

Is anyone in Austria making better Grüner Veltliner than Karl and Brigitta Steininger right now?  I don’t know for sure, but I guarantee that no one is making better Grüner for the money than these rising Kamptal superstars and, for my money, this is the best wine they make.

It serves up wild aromatics of white and stone fruit, exotic spice, white pepper and a hint of caramel.  All those notes and more pour out across your palate in a rich wine with fine density and amazing cut, vibrancy, and drive.  The finish is wonderfully long, leaving mouthwatering fresh fruits, white pepper, and a touch of lemon zest lingering. A brilliant follow-up to the 92 point 2013!

The 2015 vintage adds even more richness and intensity than usual to this very deeply texture Reserve-level Gruner. The finish is very long and rich (but bone dry) with an almost brothy savory element.

"The nose does not want to give a lot away. The palate, however, shows spicy hints of nettle and a fresh bouncy zesty backbone of lemon and grapefruit, which makes it all the more appetizing."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2014 Product #31232 (In Stock)
Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2014 Steininger Gruner Veltliner Sekt 2014

So, what happens when you take a great still wine – in this case, the 2014 Grüner Veltliner Kamptal– and give it a little fizz?  Pure joy ensues!

Steininger is Kamptal’s top producer of sparkling wines and one of the very best in all of Austria.  The family specializes in single varietal, single vintage, fizz that showcases the character of the grape and growing season.  The 2013 Grüner Veltliner Sekt is a beauty, at once creamy and full of classic Grüner fruit and terrifically dry and vibrant.  The in-bottle secondary fermentation delivers plenty of fizz, but this still reads “Grüner” with bright apple, green pea, and white pepper notes.  Easy to sip on its own and fun to pair with savory sausage or freshwater fish.

"Green pear and moss play on the nose. The palate underlines these varietal Grüner notes with the creamy, biscuity notes of autolysis and very appetizing lemon freshness which makes this dry, slender and creamy wine utterly refreshing. This seems lighter than it is but delivers lots of flavor."Wine Enthusiast 90 points

Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml Product #31238 (In Stock)
Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml Anton Bauer Gruner Veltliner Eiswein 2013 375ml

One bitterly cold morning in January 2014, Anton Bauer and his team got up before dawn and harvested the last Grüner Veltliner berries of the 2013 growing season.  The frozen berries were rushed to the winery and immediately pressed, releasing tiny amounts of super-sugar-laden juicy and leaving the still solid water behind.  The thick, viscous, juice went into tank where it slowly fermented until the yeast could do no more, bringing the wine to 12.5% alcohol and leaving a stunning amount of rich sweetness and bracing acidity behind.

Despite the 2014 harvest date, this is technically a 2013 vintage wine.  But whatever you call it, the wine is brilliant.  Rich and creamy with layers of apricot, peach and white fruit aromas and flavors, there's a touch of honey and caramel for depth and bracing, tangy, acidity for freshness.  Sits on your palate for minutes after each sip, this is a rare treat you won't want to miss.

Hirsch Gruner Veltliner Renner 2013 Product #30840 (In Stock)
Hirsch Gruner Veltliner Renner 2013 Hirsch Gruner Veltliner Renner 2013

A stylish, pure, Gruner of fine sophistication.

"With a diversity of mineral nuances more familiar from Riesling, this Grüner Veltliner projects an infectiously juicy and crunchily invigorating alliance of fresh lime, orange, pea tendrils, corn shoots and ginseng, with beet root earthiness joining wet stone on the bass line. A penetrating, almost severely but downright mouth-shakingly intense finish perpetuates the full range of diversity displayed on the firm palate, accompanied by hints of iodine, black tea smokiness plus saliva-inducing salinity and animality akin to oyster liquor. This weighs in at just 12.7% alcohol, permitting a lovely sense of levity to boot."  Vinous (Schildknecht) 93 points

"The citrus colored 2013 Grüner Veltliner Renner Erste Lage comes from a vineyard that is situated below and to the west of the Kammerner Gaisberg. The soil is a calcareous sandy silt that has formed from the underlying loess, alluvial deposits, and fragments of crystalline rocks such as gneiss, amphibolite and mica schist what could eventually explain the lovely mix of fruit and salinity in this wine. Its precise and fully ripe fruit flavors are highlighted by piquant earthy/mineral flavors that underline the freshness of this piquant, medium-bodied and elegant, well balanced Veltliner. The lovely blend of ripe fruits and salty minerals leads to a delicate finish which makes this an extremely animating wine."Wine Advocate 92 points
