Ijalba Rioja Viura Genoli Blanco 2014 Product #30627 (In Stock)
Ijalba Rioja Viura Genoli Blanco 2014 Ijalba Rioja Viura Genoli Blanco 2014

A great example of how refreshing and fun white Rioja can be when it's not too ripe or over-oaked.  Here 100% Viura sees no oak at all, and that lets the crisp, ripe, pear, apple, and stone fruit flavors shine through. The fruit pumps on through the generous finish where a touch of dusty stone adds interest. Try it with seafood, salads, or just warm afternoons!

Abanico Hazana Rioja Vinas Viejas 2014 Product #31274 (In Stock)
Abanico Hazana Rioja Vinas Viejas 2014 Abanico Hazana Rioja Vinas Viejas 2014

Wine Advocate sums this one up nicely.  A crazy good bargain.

"The 2014 Hazana Vinas Viejas is simply one of the greatest values in Rioja that money can buy. A blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, this collaboration between importer Eric Solomon and the owner and winemaker has produced an absolutely amazing Rioja from 45- to 70-year-old unirrigated, head-pruned vines. Loads of lead pencil shavings, black and red currants, licorice and tobacco leaf all jump from the glass of this dense, ruby/purple wine. Soft tannins, medium to full body and fabulous intensity, make for a sensational Rioja to drink over the next 5-7 years."Wine Advocate 92 points

Cune Viura Rioja Monopole 2015 Product #31742 (In Stock)

All tank/no oak and supremely delicious!  Almost creamy in texture with honeysuckle, almond blossom and peach flavors lingering.

"Aromas of grapefruit skin, green apples and dried pineapple in addition to some mineral undertones. Well-composed white Rioja with poignant acidity that's nevertheless in harmony with the texture and volume of fruit. Medium finish."   James Suckling 90 points

"This white is fresh and bright, but also dense, with a firm backbone of crisp acidity that carries pear, McIntosh apple and verbena flavors. The juicy, floral finish brings you back for another sip. Drink now through 2020."Wine Spectator 90 points

Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Product #31693 (In Stock)
Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010 Bodegas Vinsacro Rioja Dioro 2010

A delicious wine from an old-fashioned vineyard treated with loving, modern, care. A blend of Temparnillo (50%) Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Monastrel and Bobal, all planted mixed together in a 70 year-old vineyard at 450-800 meters of altitude and farmed organically.  Dioro represents the best lots from these old vines, aged 12-14 months in new French oak and then further at the winery.  A luxury, $46, wine on release, it’s very much an “affordable luxury” at these prices while it lasts.

"Bright purple. Potent dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Fresh and precise, with densely packed black raspberry and cola flavors that opening nicely with air. Gentle tannins build slowly on the clinging finish, with the raspberry and smoke notes echoing."  Vinous (Raynolds) 91 points

"The 2010 Vinsacro Dioro opens to an explosion of flowers and ripe blueberries that is very perfumed. It feels quite modern and aromatic with well-integrated oak and a luscious palate. This is produced from a field blend they call Vidau, which, in their case it is Garnacha, Tempranillo and a myriad of other grapes like Graciano and even Monastrell. The wine aged in brand new French oak barrels, and it's clearly a high-end wine with aspirations."Wine Advocate 92 points

Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013 Product #31016 (In Stock)
Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013 Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco 2013

A lovely example of white Rioja with just a kiss of oak to go with the dense texture and ripe, lemony fruit.

"A blend of Viura with 20% Malvasía fermented in new oak barrels where it aged in contact with the lees with frequent bâttonage for three months. The nose is quite serious and balanced showing moderate effect of the yeasts and oak, waxy aromas of apples, hints of honeycomb, fennel and licorice. The palate is quite fresh and surprisingly fruit-driven with good acidity and clean flavors. It's approachable and should also be able to age and improve in bottle for a few years. Quite impressed!"Wine Advocate 90 points

Vina Real Rioja Crianza 2011 Product #31741 (In Stock)

Old-school without hard edges and lovely now.

"Fragrant red berry and candied rose scents, with hints of vanilla and cured tobacco in the background. Silky, sweet and open-knit on entry, but the sappy raspberry and cherry flavors tighten up in the mid-palate. Shows very good clarity and lift on the clinging finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins."  Vinous (Raynolds) 90 points

Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Product #27282 (In Stock)
Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010 Bodegas Laukote Rioja Vendimia Seleccionada 2010

Norberto Miguel only makes this, his top wine, in selected vintages of exceptional ripeness and quality.  It’s from 80+ year-old Tempranillo vines planted by Norberto’s grandfather and grown on the rocky, barren, soils of Rioja Alavesa.  Norberto hand-harvests the grapes when they taste good to him and then crushes them gently by foot to extract plenty of color and flavor without getting harsh tannins from the stems or seeds.  After vinification the wines go into American and French oak barrels (about 30% new)  And there the wine sits until Norberto thinks it’s ready – not one day longer.

The result is just about the perfect marriage between Rioja tradition and modern winemaking sensibility.  In 2010, this wine is just fabulous, supple and mineral with excellent length and very little obvious oak.  Scents of black raspberry and plum fruit accented by notes of sweet spice, tobacco, violets and a touch of iron.  In the mouth, the wine is very pure and elegant, with focused dark fruit and spice lifted by a hint of tangy cherry acidity and supported by silky smooth, ripe, tannins.  With air, a touch of coffee/mocha emerges and fruit broadens, but the minerality and acidity keep the wine focused, pure, and beautiful.  Drink it now with roasted or grilled meats and enjoy how it gains even more layers over the next 8-10 years in cellar.  Outstanding value for a Rioja of this quality and grace.

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2005 Product #31276 (In Stock)
La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2005

A great vintage for this classic.

"The 2005 Gran Reserva 904 is a superb blend of Tempranillo from the villages of Briñas, Labastida and Villalba with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and fermented in stainless steel for 18 days at 25 C. Malolactic fermentation was spontaneous and lasted 38 days. These wines are marked by a long aging in used American oak barrels following the most strict Riojan tradition; four years during which time the wine was manually racked eight times. This is usually my favorite wine from La Rioja Alta and 2005 is one of its best showings, going back to the quality of the vintages of the 1950s and 60s. The nose is very balsamic with notes of camphor, hints of mint, leather and hung game wrapped around a core of cherries in liqueur. Together it is balanced, subtle, truly elegant and classical. The palate is only medium-bodied but with great concentration of flavors that are very tasty, mineral, almost salty and framed by ultra-fine tannins and smashing balance. A great classic."Wine Advocate 96 points

"One look, one whiff, one taste and you're swooning. This mature, tawny, ready-to-drink gran reserva with aromas of lemon peel, cedar and dried cherry is the epitome of elegance. A juicy, supple palate is highly approachable, while flavors of vanilla, orange peel, saffron and dried plum don't waver on the finish. Drink through 2027."Wine Enthusiast 96 points
