Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007 Product #22930 (In Stock)
Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007 Grivault Bourgogne Blanc 2007

The 2007 vintage was a challenge in Burgundy.  The growing season started early but then slowed dramatically during a wet June and cool, cloudy, July and August.  When August winds began to blow and dry things out, growers jumped to start their Pinot Noir harvests before rot could spread and carry away their crop.  Chardonnay growers had to make a tough decision – start to harvest quickly (limiting losses to rot) or wait for better ripeness and accept lower yields.

At Domaine Grivault, Michel Bardet decided to wait, and was able to harvest a reasonably sized crop in September with good fruit flavors and ripe acids.  After fermentation, the wine completed its malolactic fermentation over the winter and remained in used (4 years older or older) barrels until bottling.  Like most good 2007s, this was intense and a little intimidating when it arrived in the US in March, 2010, but now it’s started to unfurl.

Today, there’s a lot going on aromatically here, with notes of French butter and grilled nuts on top and apple skin, chervil, citrus and a touch of dried herb honey swirling underneath.  In the mouth, very 2007 – bracing and bright with loads of bright lemon, passion fruit, and lemon rind at first and then green apple, lime, limestone coming up underneath.  A note of fresh butter and nut shows towards the end before the juicy acids and saline mineral kick in to make your mouth water.  A sense of lemon butter and fresh mint lingers on and on.  A stunning wine for shell fish or poultry with a touch of citrus right now and still plenty of potential to improve.

If you love Grivault’s Bourgogne Blanc and have never tried his “real” Meursault -- well, it’s time.  The flavors and aromas in the Meursault are very similar to the Bourgogne but ratcheted up a notch.  Hazelnuts, almond, butter, white flower and peach aromas and flavors plus a beguiling fresh mint note.  Easy to drink now but with a good 5-10 years of development ahead of it.

Grivault Meursault 2010 Product #26144 (In Stock)
Grivault Meursault 2010 Grivault Meursault 2010

“Baby Meursault” is good, but the “real deal” is better yet!  The aromatics here are rich and toasty, with green and golden apple, roasted nuts, and a whiff of fresh butter mingling nicely.  On the palate, the big, rich flavors of cultured butter, golden apples, and pineapple, are balanced by wonderful, lifted acidity, and plenty of minerality.  The finish goes on and on with lingering notes of yellow fruits, fresh mint, and toasted nuts.  Delicious!

Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2008 Product #23759 (In Stock)
Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2008 Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2008

Perrieres is justly considered one of the best vineyards in Meursault, and the Grivault Perrieres shows you why.  The concentration, depth, and intensity all step up a notch from the Village wine and the fruit gets a little more exotic – there’s fresh pineapple and other tropical fruit here to go with the citrus and apple.  Rich and creamy, there’s also a fine chalky minerality at the end.  Tempting now, best from 2013 or so.

Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2007 Product #22932 (In Stock)
Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2007 Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2007

Every year, this wine makes the case that - whatever the official classifications say - there is Grand Cru terroir in Meursault.  Focused minerality over rich fresh butter, nuts, mint, and orchard fruits with a delicious salty caramel note on the finish.  Today this is verging on an oily texture and shows a lot of ripe fruit, especially for 2007.  Give it 7 or 8 years and it will gain complexity, energy and - oddly enough - freshness to go with the deep, rich, flavors.  Magnificent wine.

Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2008 Product #23798 (In Stock)
Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2008 Grivault Meursault 1er Cru Clos Des Perrieres 2008

If Perrieres is the best site in Meursault, Domaine Albert Grivault’s small walled vineyard of Clos des Perrieres is the best of the best.  Like almost all of the great Grand Cru vineyards of the Cote de Beaune, this sits on the break between the granite upthrust of the Cote and the finer limestone and clay soils below.  In 2008, the wine’s texture is rich, almost unctuous, and the flavors are very intense.  The flavors and aromas feature citrus, tropical fruit, grilled nuts, fresh cream butter, and brilliant fresh mint.  Lots of richness, but balancing bright acidity as well and plenty of Meursault’s classic mineral character.  A lovely wine to cellar for a while and drink over 10-15 years.
