Les Coeres’s pedigree as the best vineyard in Montagny is on display here in a wine that beautifully marries power and finesse, showy ripeness and finesse.  From vines planted 23 to 74 years ago, this is fermented and aged in French oak (just 10% new) and allowed to rest on the lees for 8-10 months.

A darker, more brassy-gold, color than Le Crets, but just as brilliantly clear.  The nose is generous and distinctive, with classic 1er Cru white Burgundy scents of lemon curd, Granny Smith apple, toast, vanilla, grilled hazelnut and tangy butter.  On the palate, rich with fine volume with no excess weight, the flavors of ripe lemon, green apple, hazelnut, butter, mint and more show impressive clarity and drive.  A fine dose of minerality and juicy acids propel the long finish of tangy fruit, buttered nut, and dusty chalk.  Lobster, shrimp, roast chicken and mushrooms will all work here in a wine delicious right now and built to improve for 4-6 years.

Burgundy's 2014 vintage gave us silky, supple, reds with lovely fruit and plenty of classic Burgundy terroir.  Here's a great example from 4.5 acres mainly in and near Vosne-Romanee. Ripe, hand-harvested, fruit is 100% destemmed, fermented in tank and then aged in twice-used French oak.  There's a very pretty perfume of tangy red cherry, raspberry, violets and a hint of something earthy - or "animal" as the winemaker says.  On the palate it's very pure and fresh and transparent with a silky feel to the tart cherry/raspberry fruit.  Stony minerality and fine tannins provide support to this very pretty, very delicious, Pinot Noir.  Drink now - 2020 or so.

It’s illegal to put Cabernet Sauvignon in a wine labeled “Brunello,” but Bordeaux’s best red grape grows so well here that Mastrojanni just couldn’t resist planting some on the old San Pio estate.  Since 1997 that rich, ripe, Cabernet has been blended with 20% declassified Brunello to produce this delicious super-Tuscan blend.  The aromas and texture suggest richer Bordeaux or fresher Napa Cabernet but the bright cherry core and juicy, long, finish say “Italy” loud and clear.  A very fine value in small-production (less than 600 cases) super-Tuscan Cabernet.

"A blend of 20% Sangiovese and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 San Pio is a hearty and approachable red wine that would taste great next to a succulent cut of beef. What happens with a top Burgundy winemaker (Jean-Michel Guillon) encourages friends and importers of wines from France (Olivier Daubresse) and Spain (Jonas Gustafsson) to import a Barolo from Italy?  When the Barolo is the stunning 2010 La Tartufaia from young Giulia Negri – aka “BaroloGirl”, something pretty magical results!

Giulia is a child of Barolo (her family owns the well-respected Serrandenari estate), and has  struck out on her own to make Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (which is how she met Jean-Michel), and a classically styled, very pure, Nebbiolo from Barolo’s great 2010 vintage.  Very pure, lifted, scents of red and black berries waft from the glass with accents of tobacco, plum, dried rose petal, and tar.  It’s nicely relaxed and pure – especially at this young age – on the palate, with juicy red/black fruits, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco, and hints of smoky oak.  With air, a little truffle and potpourri emerge and the fruit flavors get deeper and more prominent as the wine sails on to a generous finish over sweet, ripe, tannins.  Round and rich, this tempts right now with big tannins that melt away nicely but will become more exciting and explosive from 2017 – 2025.

Pinot Meunier's home is Champagne, where it's the region's most planted grape and makes up the heart of many a fine toasty, rich, sparkling wine.  As an abandoned sparkling wine experiment, Amalie Robert's version is arguably the most consistently excellent example in the world with a string of 90 and 91 point ratings from Wine Advocate, Josh Raynolds at Vinous, and more.

As you'd expect in a Champagne grape, there's a bit of tartness here and I always find it a bit tight and tingly on release.  In warm vintages - like 2014 - it opens quickly, and if you tried it when Dena and Ernie were here in July you'll be shocked at how much flesh it's gained in 45 days.  I like Ernie's tasting note so much, I'll quote it here:  "Delish red. Sweet aromas of ripe Montmorency cherries, red currants and bittersweet chocolate entice the palate into a rosy red fruit mélange intertwined with savory bits and restraining acidity that linger effortlessly. This wine is as elegant as the day is long."

The Côte Chalonnaise village of Montagny is one of the last bastions  of real white Burgundy value, and this rich and vibrant wine makes that point nicely.  Aromas of white fruits, vanilla, and brioche get a nice lift from hints of mint and lime.  Round on the palate with zesty white peach, lemon curd, green apple and fresh hazelnut flavors and a dose of lime zest and crushed stone minerality at the end.  This will work well with sushi and smoked salmon now and with richer fish and poultry dishes over the next few years.

Perhaps THE most stellar value of the offering for drinking now and over the next 10 years.  Fourchaume sits on the same slope and to the north of the Grand Crus and often gives glimpses of Grand Cru richness and power. Wonderful Chablis intensity and salty vibrancy here but also a very generous dose of rich, ripe, buttered pear.  Turns stony and showing a touch of wood-induced salty caramel (20% ages in 1-5 year-old barrel) on the long, pure, finish.  Extraordinary value here in a wine that’s almost too delicious today to justify waiting.

While Fourchaume is more rich and immediately delicious, this could be the better value if you’d like to cellar your Chablis for 3-10 years.  One of the warmer sites in Chablis and, like the Grand Crus, with prime southern exposure, Mont de Milieu gives wines of more body and richness and most other 1er sites.  The richer fruit benefits from a bit more wood (50% of 1-5 years age) to tame the fruit and allow true Chablis minerality and vivacity emerge.  Delicious now for the fruit and spice but at its best from 2020.
