Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.”  The 2015 edition is even better, clearly the best release of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date.  As always, it’s a blend of 85% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region.  Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.

The wine opens with big, bold aromas of black cherry, dark berries, underbrush, loamy earth and cracked black pepper. Take a sip and you'll love the explosion of dark raspberry and blackberry fruit and accents of pepper, rich earth, and sweet spice - all from the grape, because there's no oak here at all.  The finish is broad, fresh and very long, with fine, dusty, tannins providing food-friendly support and dark berry and pepper flavors lingering nicely.  A delicious wine that sell for a crazy low price.

"Tire Bouchon" is the French phrase for a corkscrew, but the literal translation is better:  Cork Puller.  And you're going to pull a lot of these corks this fall and winter! This is a throw-back (in terms of both time and how you'll drink it!) red made from Grenache, Syrah, and 10% old-timey Aramon and Oeillade Noire.  While it's all grown in Adrien Roustan's Vacqueyras vineyards, the old grapes aren't allowed, so it's bottled as Vin de France.  The winemaking is pretty old school, too.  All the grapes are tossed into the vat together, covered with some dry ice, and allowed to start fermentation as they will.  10 days in the fermenter, a few months resting in tank, and then ready for you to slurp!

It's friendly from the first sniff, with open, generous, aromas of crushed black raspberries, sweet cherry, violets, and a hint of ripe black olive.  Take a sip and let the party begin!  This wine just oozes sweet, fresh, very ripe red and black cherry/berry fruit with a touch of cracked pepper, lavender and rich loamy earth for complexity.  Juicy and mouthwatering, but not at all tart, with a bit of Black Forest cake (chocolate and sweet cherry) coming up on the supple, lingering, finish.  Sure, it's going to go swell with all kinds of casual foods - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, stews - but it will shine most brightly when shared with (soon to be very happy) friends!

On the palate there’s a pleasing weightiness from that extra notch of ripeness 2015’s near perfect conditions brought that you wouldn’t expect from all those brisk, fresh aromas. That pear aroma takes on a lovely ripeness, and there’s a delicious ripe apple flavor as well, like biting into a fresh Honeycrisp. A refreshing, versatile white.

Lodi is known for its plush, jammy style of Zinfandel, and Victor Vineyards’ version manages to stay much more balanced than most examples while still retaining a sense of place. At 14.8% alcohol, it’s not a light wine by any means, but it carries its weight well, and the alcohol comes across as pleasant warmth rather than booziness. Aromas of raspberry, strawberry, baking spices and pepper round out the appealing nose. Take a sip and you’ll be rewarded with brighter fruit flavors than you might expect - a hint of cranberry keeps things fresh, and the mouthfeel is definitely full bodied and satisfyingly plush, but not overwhelming. Ideal with an all-American meal of grilled New York strip or burgers!

Fresh Chardonnay crushed and fermented in steel with 6 months on the lees for salinity and breadth. Pretty aromas of white fruit, white flowers and sea shells. Crystal clear palate of crisp apple and stone fruit with citrusy undertones.  Fresh and saline through the long, clear, salty finish.  Day 2 - Sea shell and iodine on the nose then very pure and salty on the palate with green melon and citrus and apple underneath.  Very long finish of juicy fruit and wet stones.

"The 2014 Chablis Villages, which is aged in stainless steel over six months, has a slightly earthy, almost mulch-like bouquet that feels awkward at the moment. The palate is fresh and citrus-driven on the entry with moderate weight of fruit and then segues into a tightly-wound finish that feels there is plenty of energy coiled up. Jean-François Mestre and his son, Nicolas, make their Bourgogne Blanc with all the care of a fine Meursault – which it nearly is!  The grapes grow in a half-dozen small plots within the commune of Meursault tucked between the village and the RN 74 road running north to Beaune and south to Puligny-Montrachet.  Just as in their 1er Cru Meursault vineyards, farming is organic (in conversion to biodynamic), with a mixture of grassy cover crops (to force the vines to compete for moisture and nutrients) and plowed rows (putting that cover crop back into the soil).  Harvest is by hand, sorting careful, and pressing light into French oak (all used).

The forward, ripe, and ready-to-love character of the 2014 vintage shines through here, starting with a generous nose of fresh peach, yellow apple, pear, and lightly buttered and toasted hazelnut.  Rich and broad and creamy in texture, the palate delivers ripe peach and pear fruit with more buttery nut flavors leading to a lightly nutty spice and citrus finish.

It’s illegal to put Cabernet Sauvignon in a wine labeled “Brunello,” but Bordeaux’s best red grape grows so well here that Mastrojanni just couldn’t resist planting some on the old San Pio estate.  Since 1997 that rich, ripe, Cabernet has been blended with 20% declassified Brunello to produce this delicious super-Tuscan blend.  The aromas and texture suggest richer Bordeaux or fresher Napa Cabernet but the bright cherry core and juicy, long, finish say “Italy” loud and clear.  A very fine value in small-production (less than 600 cases) super-Tuscan Cabernet.

"A blend of 20% Sangiovese and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2012 San Pio is a hearty and approachable red wine that would taste great next to a succulent cut of beef. The wine ages in oak for 18 months and consequently delivers a full offering of aromas that spans from bright cherry fruit to exotic spice. Pinot Meunier's home is Champagne, where it's the region's most planted grape and makes up the heart of many a fine toasty, rich, sparkling wine.  As an abandoned sparkling wine experiment, Amalie Robert's version is arguably the most consistently excellent example in the world with a string of 90 and 91 point ratings from Wine Advocate, Josh Raynolds at Vinous, and more.

As you'd expect in a Champagne grape, there's a bit of tartness here and I always find it a bit tight and tingly on release.  In warm vintages - like 2014 - it opens quickly, and if you tried it when Dena and Ernie were here in July you'll be shocked at how much flesh it's gained in 45 days.  I like Ernie's tasting note so much, I'll quote it here:  "Delish red. Sweet aromas of ripe Montmorency cherries, red currants and bittersweet chocolate entice the palate into a rosy red fruit mélange intertwined with savory bits and restraining acidity that linger effortlessly. This wine is as elegant as the day is long."

6 cases available.  Art Weber planted this Dundee Hills site in 1976 just down the road from Maresh Vyd, and Jim Maresh has made wine from own-rooted Pommard planted in 1976 and 1983 since 2010.  It's a nice step up from the Dundee Hills bottling, with more richeness, deeper fruit, and lots and lots of perfume.  More open and forward than the Maresh Vyd, this is a delicious choice to drink now - 2029 or so.

"Vivid red. Mineral- and spice-tinged aromas of fresh red berries and candied rose develop a hint of incense as the wine opens up. Shows impressive clarity and lift in the mouth, offering sappy raspberry, spice cake and floral pastille flavors joined by a jolt of smoky minerals. Silvia Puig's 2015 Garnaxta Blanca starts with very old bush-trained vines growing on small terraces running up and down Priorat’s jumbled hills.  The vines poke out of a cover of broken red and brown slate with flecks of mica called “llicorella” that gives the fruit an almost salty, minerally, feel.  Hot, sunny, days drive ripening while cool, clear, nights maintain freshness.  Fermentation and aging in large French oak casks adds roundness while time in clay amphora gives a portion of the wine a rich, exotic, feel.

The 2015 is very young right now and while it’s already delicious, I think it will be better still this Fall and through 2020+.  Big aromas of green pineapple, apricot, fresh peach, fennel frond and salty stone carry on through a luxuriously textured, mouth-coating, palate.  Notes of spice, orange blossom, and anise emerge for even more complexity as the wine sits in your mouth – and it does sit there for a while as this beauty shows unbelievable palate and finishing length.  A burst of fruity acidity and loads of salty stone minerality bring freshness at the end.  To call it “the best White Grenache in the world” is actually faint praise:  this is a great, great, wine that delivers deep and profound satisfaction.

"A blend of head-pruned Monastrell with some Cabernet Sauvignon from chalk-rich soils fermented in open stainless-steel vats and aged in barrique for 20 months. You can feel the warmth and ripeness of the year in the aromas of prunes, blackberries, thyme and rosemary accented with plenty of sweet spices and smoky notes from the barrel that might need a little bit more time in bottle. The palate is full-bodied, with powerful tannins lifted by the alcohol on a warm finish. I'd wait a little bit for the bottle to render the puppy fat and allow the oak to better integrate. Silvia Puig intends her Black Label cuvee to be rounder, more supple, and easier to appreciate young than the more structured Classic wine.  In 2014, there are 1,340 bottles of this roughtly 60% Garnatxa (both Negre and Peluda, aka “Hairy Grenache”) and 40% Carinyena from old vineyards scattered across Priorat.  She ferments the wine in 300 and 500 liter French oak casks that have had one of the ends removed, and then puts the ends back on to let the wine age for 13 months.

There's always a friendly, chunky, richness to this cuvee and in 2014 that's joined by remarkable poise and precision.  It sings out with bold aromas of dark raspberry, ripe blueberry, and cocoa powder with subtle floral accents.  Mouthfilling and rich on the palate with more dark fruit - plum, raspberry, blackberry - plus deep dark chocolate, crushed flower, and a bare hint of cola nut.  I love how the flavors really fan out to cover your palate from side-to-side and how the deep, weighty, richness is matched by sprightly freshness.  The chalky tannins make this an outstanding choice for grilled or roasted meats tonight and for a decade or more.

Silvia Puig made just 827 bottles of our favorite all-around Priorat red in the cool, fresh, 2014 vintage.  It's a blend of 65% Garnatxa, 30% Syrah, and 5% Carinyena fermented in open-top 300 liter and 500 liter French oak and then aged 13 months in those same barrels (with the tops back on).  The vintage gives this more energy and zip than previous releases, but there's no shortage of pure Priorat power.

Big, classically Priorat, aromas of spice, chocolate, blackberry, raspberry and baked plum really jump from the glass.  In the mouth it's rich and ripe with oodles of blue-black fruit, more chocolate and spice, and accents of tangy blueberry, blood orange and pomegranate.  Chewy and dense right on through the very long finish with notes of blackberry, plum, and flambéed cherries lingering on and on.  This will drink young and repay 10-15 years in cellar.

Many argue that this is Oregon's very best Chardonnay; we agree!  Jim Maresh only makes this rich, creamy, wine from vines planted in 1983 in top vintages, and the last one reviewed - the 2012 - certainly deserved its 93 point score from Wine Advocate.  Complex aromas of stone fruit, honey, herb and a touch of smoke lead to a vibrant mouthful of intense fruit, brioche, honey and spice flavors.  Nicely textured and long on the finish with stone, citrus, apricot, butter and more lingering long and fresh.
