Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Product #27038 (In Stock)
Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011 Finca Del Castillo Tempranillo La Mancha 2011

We have no idea how such a delicious wine made from 30 year-old, dry farmed, Tempranillo vines in La Manacha could be quite this inexpensive…but we’re glad it is! This is real, honest, “vinous” wine, packed with cranberry and black cherry fruit, accents of licorice root and cracked pepper, and long, smooth and refreshing on the finish.  A perfect wine for big celebratory parties, weddings, back yard cookouts, or just sipping all on its own.

“Bright ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by black pepper and candied rose. Tightly focused red berry flavors are underscored by smoky mineral and floral qualities. Emphatically fruity and silky in texture, with a smooth, gently sweet finish.”International Wine Cellar 88 points

Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011 Product #26774 (In Stock)
Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011 Borsao Monte Oton Garnacha 2011

Opens with pretty aromas of ripe red plum and red berries with a hint of violet.  In the mouth ripe and round but very fresh the loads of black raspberry and red plum fruit at the core with accents of violet, blood orange, and even a dash of coffee.  The marvel here is how all the ripe fruit stays so fresh and refreshing as the bright acidity and light tannins provide perfect support and notes of juicy fruit and violets linger nicely.  Pulls you back for another sip and then another glass.  A great everyday red to serve on its own or with pretty much anything (meat, fowl, richer fish or roasted veggies) you’d want to eat on a Tuesday night!

“Another 100% Garnacha cuvee, the 2011 Monte Oton comes from hillside vineyards planted at an elevation of 1,200 feet on the southern side of the Moncayo mountain range. No oak is used in this totally naked red. It emphasizes minerality and fruit, as evidenced by its crushed chalk-like notes intermixed with sweet kirsch, lavender and licorice. This fresh, medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, hedonistic as well as intellectually challenging wine should drink well for 2-3 years.”Wine Advocate 89 points

Dom Vougeon Brouilly 2011 Product #26191 (In Stock)
Dom Vougeon Brouilly 2011 Dom Vougeon Brouilly 2011

Nicely ripe aromas of black cherry, crushed black raspberry, cocoa powder, licorice and nutmeg open the show and get darker and richer with a little air.  In the mouth, it’s fresh and juicy with flavors of black cherry and strawberry/rubarb pie in the middle and notes of powdered baking chocolate, and tangy citrus skin underneath.  Finishes with some nice and juicy dark berry fruit and just a hint of clove and citrusy acidity.  Pretty yummy, actually, and even better with a light chill and a bite of grilled sausage (hot dogs, anyone?) or a burger.  Kind of a silly wine, but an even sillier price!

"Ideal for burgers off the grill or other summery foods, this delightful Beaujolais cru is a terrific “bistro wine,” meaning a gulpable red by the glass or the bottle. It will fuel conversation, not dominate it. Better have a second bottle handy.”  Dave McIntyre, The Washington Post

Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011 Product #26770 (In Stock)
Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011 Bodegas Monteviejo Malbec Festivo 2011

A lot more going on in this terrific value Malbec than the price suggests. Monteviejo is owned by the folks at Bordeaux's Ch Le Gay and the wines are made by up-and-commer (and former rock musician) Marcelo Pelleriti - and the combination is turning out some great wines even at this price level.  Very ripe aromas and flavors of plum and black cherry get complexity from oak spice and notes of fresh earth.  A bit of violet perfume adds to the party in this juicy, fun, red for burgers, chicken, or just sipping.

Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Product #27006 (In Stock)
Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Chilensis Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

This is a big "bang for the buck" Cabernet from Chile that reminds you how Chile first established its global reputation for top quality Cab at rock-bottom prices.  Fruit for this wine grows near Chile’s Coastal Mountain range in the Colchagua Valley.  Daytime high temperatures can reach 98 degrees here, but cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean cool the fruit at night to preserve freshness and acidity.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon delivers plenty of classic Cabernet fruit –  currant, plum, and blackberries.  It also display's Chile's trademark whiff of herbs and some appealing tobacco aromas, giving the wine more complexity than you’d expect at this price.  In the mouth, it’s juicy and satisfying, with an extra dose of black raspberry and currant fruit.  The juicy acids keep everything in balance and make this a flexible companion with a wide range of foods.

Marchigue Carmenere Gran Reserva 2010 Product #26230 (In Stock)
Marchigue Carmenere Gran Reserva 2010 Marchigue Carmenere Gran Reserva 2010

They thought it was Merlot, but Chilean wine growers have learned it's actually a Bordeaux varietal.  Here you'll find the rich, dark-fruited, side of the grape with notes of espresso, cocoa, and tobacco around the black currant and berry fruit.  Finishes firm and clean with lingering sage, tobacco, and thyme notes.  Excellent value for cookouts or weeknight meals.

"This carmenere has some of the leafy character that defines the grape, but it is balanced by dark-fruit flavors, a hint of smoky earth and medium body that make it an attractive wine — and even more attractive at this price. BEST BUY" Washington Post, August 15, 2012

A new discovery for us, this juicy red is a blend of Carignon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the region of Gard, just south of Cotes du Rhone in Languedoc Rouissilon.  The Roussel family pioneered organic farming here (they've been all organic since 1973!), and their care and passion certainly shows in the wine.  Loads of raspberry and blueberry fruit with a meaty complexity and a touch of warm stone character.  Ripe and fun to drink, this is a whole lot of wine for the money!

Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011 Product #26846 (In Stock)
Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011 Los Ailos Syrah-malbec 2011

As much as we love Argentina's straight Malbec wines, they can get even better with the help of a blending partner.  In the Los Ailos, Syrah plays that role, taking what would have been a pleasant, juicy, red to a whole new level of richness and flavor.

The 2011 Los Ailos Syrah/Malbec opens with pretty aromas of ripe cherry and black plum.  Then, in the mouth, it's ripe and juicy with plenty of fresh black fruit, a little leather, and a nice touch of minerality.  It's balanced and fresh with a fine spread of ripe tannin on the back promising good things at table.  Very nice value.

Cortenova Primitivo 2011 Cortenova Primitivo 2011

A head scratcher: How does a Veneto/Fruili winery turn out such a ripe, luscious, and nicely typical Primitivo? Beats us, but this delivers a big mouthful of juicy, fruity fun and is about to become your “go to” pizza/pasta (or sausage, grilled chicken, burger, etc.) red.  It's 100% Primitivo - a close genetic relative to Zinfandel - that delivers dark blackberry and black raspberry fruit with just a touch of earth and tar.  The kind of wine you'd drink from a tumbler in Italy. Just good, honest, fun.

Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012 Product #27165 (In Stock)
Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012 Dinarells Negre Emporda 2012

This is just shockingly interesting and delicious for the money.  It comes from Spain’s Emporda Costa Brava region in the very northeastern corner of Catalonia near the border with France. It’s steep, rocky, territory that’s regularly lashed by the Tramontane, strong northerly winds that can sweep through the region at 70mph.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with traditional Garnacha and Mazuelo, this is hand-harvested and made in tank.  The show opens with luscious aromas of black plum, crushed blackberries, leather and bitter chocolate with just a touch of lavender.  Then, it’s juicy and fresh in the mouth with loads of sweet blackberry and plum fruit accented by a bit of bitter chocolate, earth and spice flavors. A squirt of blood orange acidity keeps things fresh and dark fruit, nutmeg, and slate notes all linger nicely.  Easy enough to just sip and enough going on to make it a great food wine, too.

Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Product #25534 (In Stock)
Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Clos Robert Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Bob Stack is best known as an importer of fine value wines from around the world (his Red Dust Shiraz has been a favorite here for years).  He named his California negotiant venture Clos Robert to clearly indicate his preference for French-styled Cabs, and that’s what he delivers here.  The 2008 Clos Robert Cab is made from a mix of purchased fruit that Bob vinifies and wine he buys from a range of suppliers across California.

The 2008 Clos Robert is terrific blend of California ripeness and Bordeaux style.  The aromas and flavors lead with big red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit that fill your mouth from side to side without ever becoming heavy or clumsy.  Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, and sweet spice add complexity and juicy acids and fine tannins keep the wine precise and refreshing.  Certainly a great match for a grilled burger, but this will stand up to strip steak and delight on its own as well.

Palacios Remondo Rioja La Vendimia 2010 Product #27128 (In Stock)
Palacios Remondo Rioja La Vendimia 2010 Palacios Remondo Rioja La Vendimia 2010

Very nice value in a ripe, red fruited, Rioja that's on the fruitier side of this region's many styles.

"ased in Alfaro in Rioja Baja, Bodegas Palacios Remondo is where Alvaro Palacios wields his talent when not in Priorat (or elsewhere). Given his exacting standards there, it is unsurprising that he has sought to decrease production in order to improve quality. It is also unsurprising that these form an excellent set of Rioja wines, sculpted in a more modern style, although to be truly honest, I found his cheaper wines just as good, if not better than the flagship Propiedad! The 2010 Vendimia has a lifted nose driven by Garnacha. It offers ripe maraschino cherry, marmalade and damson fruit that is uncomplicated but very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied and very well-balanced, underpinned by fine, but firm tannins. There is a rigid backbone to this wine that complements the fleshy red currant and raspberry fruit on the finish. Drink now-2017."Wine Advocate 90 points
